Heyo, people. Emily here. So as a Sonic fan, I always wanted to see a Sonic movie. But just recently here in 2020, Sega and Paramount just released a Sonic movie starring famous actors such as Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and many more. It was originally going to come out in 2019, but after some criticism of Sonic's original design, the companies decided to hold back the release. Was it worth the wait, or is it a way past bad wait?

Let's start with the story. So the movie opens with Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz who also voiced Dewey from the 2017 version of Ducktales and Randy Cunningham from Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, running from Eggman, played by Jim Carrey. The movie then goes on to tell the story about Sonic. Sonic was born on a island and was raised by Longclaw the Owl. However, a tribe of echidnas finds out about Sonic's speed powers and tries to kill him. Longclaw ends up getting hit and gives him a bag of rings which will be very important to the plot. Longclaw says that will make portals where it will protect him from danger. So Sonic ends up getting sent to Earth and becomes all alone.
We skip to 10 years later, where Sonic starts enjoying his secret life in Green Hills, Montana but he always wanted to have friends. He later ends up causing a power outage by his super speed. The next day, the US Department of  Defense hires Robotnik to uncover the source of the outage. Soon, Sonic meets Tom who tells him that there's bad people who are after him. So they team up to get Sonic's rings which ended up on a building in San Francisco.
This movie is your typical alien comes to earth story but it actually does it pretty interestally good. And it had a lot of good subplots with Robotnik and his assistant and Tom and his wife Maddie, played by Tika Sumpter.
The climax and ending of the movie was so unexpected. I didn't know where it was going. When Sonic was knocked out, I truly thought he was dead but luckily he wasn't.
The story is good but it does have a lot of plot holes, for example, how does Sonic's superspeed knock out all the power in the world and how does Sonic know how to drive a car?  These plot holes could've been easily explained but they never do.
But overall, the story is the best part of the movie.
Now onto the acting and CGI. The acting is pretty decent. It's not the best or the worst. Jim Carrey does a pretty good job of playing the evil genius trope. Marsden does a pretty decent job of playing that police officer turned best friend to the protagonist pretty fine. The rest is either decent or not bad.
The CGI is surprisingly good in this movie. This beats the 2017's Beauty and The Beast CGI way more. The CGI is one of the things liked about the movie.
Now onto the characters. Starting with Sonic. Sonic is just the typical outcast because he yearns for a friend. The most obvious difference between this movie and all the other video game movies is that the main character and the antagonist isn't noticeably different. Sonic is his typical cocky and chili dog loving self. But some changes were that he wanted friends and he hated mushrooms. Though these were never mention in any games or tv shows, but it kinda gives his character depth.
Now with Eggman, he is the main antagonist who wants to kill the protagonist. Again, Jim Carrey does a pretty good job at portraying this evil genius. He is very funny and the best character in the movie, especially this scene here:
He is the comical genius like in the games. In honesty, he's the best character.
Now to talk about the other characters. The other characters are just a bit.... forgettable. Like they're just there for the sake of the plot. The only person who seems to be important to the plot is Tom and his wife Maddie. But the other characters either could've been removed from the story or just side characters.
Overall opinion: So this movie has a bit of  things it could've done right, like remove some characters who weren't important like Agent Stone and Maddie's sister. And could've explained how did Sonic's superspeed knocked out all the power in the world. But if you don't focus on that, I'd say it's pretty good for a video game adaption. I give this movie a 9/10 and I recommend it even if you're not a Sonic fan.
This is Emily signing off.
